With training from Maaco in Rancho Cordova, Calif., a local high schooler restored a $500 ’69 VW Baja Bug that won first places at nationally known Bug-O-Ramas. “Thank you so much Gary Jeffery for all the time you spent ‘teaching me how to fish,’” Kyle Tapia wrote, “and thank you Maaco Collision Repair & Auto Painting for all the supplies knowledge and training!” Kyle apprenticed at Gary’s center through the Regional Occupational Program (ROP) at Bella Vista High School. The 17-year-old spent afternoons assisting with bodywork, prepping, masking, painting and detailing. “It works out really well,” Gary said about the program. “It helps keep kids out of trouble and teaches them a trade.”
