West Philadelphia High School’s Academy of Applied Automotive and Mechanical Science crafted the Tour de Sol-winning K-1 Attack hybrid vehicle from the ground up. Tony Martino had then visited the school and encouraged several students with summer jobs and the possibility of moving up the Maaco ladder. Last month, Mr. Martino's program moved forward for a second year as six more youngsters visited corporate headquarters. They spent a day broadening their horizons with lessons in basic business skills, followed by a week in which they were paid to learn to cut and buff. Philadelphia center operators Pete Carrea and Dave DeMarco were among those meeting all the candidates that first day in King of Prussia. Quality Assurance team members Andy Cueroni and Jeremiah Priser trained them as detailers over the next week. Now, Pete and Dave have employed three students for the summer. The program’s continuation was initiated by Vice President Patrick Donohue with coordination assistance from Customer Service Director Sonya Bohmann and National Accounts Manager Paul Iverson.
