Spring cleaning for your vehicle

Release date: April 22, 2008  /  Print This Print This

When the calendar turns to spring, we often find ourselves in a cleaning mode, looking to revitalize our homes, our yards, even ourselves. Well, that same thinking should extend to your car, because one of the best ways to retain its value is to keep it looking new.

In recognition of Car Care Month in April (May in Canada), Maaco locations are providing advice on how to take better care of your vehicle before it starts looking its age. Whether it is a little special pampering for its appearance or regular car washes, there are many things drivers can do to get their vehicles looking clean, bright and smart, said President David Lapps.

"It’s common sense that keeping your car clean will help maintain the luster and condition of the paint, but we often take our cars for granted and don’t take the time to keep them in top shape," Lapps said. “We see plenty of vehicles that come in for a paint job that might have been delayed if the owner had paid attention to the exterior.”

According to the Car Care Council, more than $4 billion was spent last year in North America on enhancements to keep the interior and exterior of vehicles looking like new. As consumers spend more time in their vehicles and drive more miles each year, many are placing more importance on comfort, luxury and appearance, the council said.

Lapps suggests the following cost-effective ways car owners can rejuvenate the appearance of their automobiles:

• The Basics – Wash your car regularly, it’s that simple. But it’s not as simple as taking some dish detergent and a couple of rags and hosing your car off. Household dish detergents will strip wax off the car and can potentially damage the paint. Use a cleaner specifically made for automobiles and use terry cloth towels because they pull dirt from the surface. You should hose the car off before washing and do the wash in a cool, shaded area to prevent spotting and drying of the cleaner on the car.

• Go Deep – After an initial wash, visually inspect the paint for particles that have adhered to the paint such as tree sap, salt residue, or unfortunate insects. Local auto parts stores sell bug and tar removers designed to protect your car's finish.

• Wax On, Wax Off – Every spring and fall, use a wax and polish (these two terms are used interchangeably) to improve the shine and protect the surface. This will go a long ways toward protecting your investment.

• Uh, Oh – If your car is involved in an accident, no matter how minor, have the damage immediately evaluated to maintain your safety and prevent even more body and paint damage.
