Volunteers working with the Good News Garage in Burlington, Vt., spent several years converting a 1994 Saturn, with two goals: to promote alternatives to polluting, gasoline-powered vehicles, and to help the non-profit garage carry out its regular mission to repair clunkers and give them to people in need. Gone are the original engine and radiator, and in their place sit batteries that signal the car's recent transformation from conventional rig to electricity-powered vehicle that need never again pull up to a gas pump. Maaco operator Mike Fortuna said he was happy to get involved in the project: “It needed paint, and that’s what we do.” The crew fixed the dents, removed the old decals and applied a shiny new blue-and-green paint job for free. The vehicle is being driven by Good News Garage staff as a mascot car for a year to promote alternative cars and then given away. |
